The Loser Point+1
The thesis

In the land of the blind, the one-point loss is king.

In the NHL, a regulation loss gets you nothing. Winning is nice, but an overtime loss still produces half the value.

Over a season, the ability to lose efficiently can separate the crap teams from those considered playoff-caliber.

The standings combine two fundamentally different currencies: points earned by winning and points rescued in defeat. This site aims to better understand which teams thrive by doing the former, and survive by the latter.

The core measures

Loser Point Lift
OTL ÷ GP × 84

The projected standings points supplied by games a team did not win.

Loser Point Efficiency
OTL ÷ all losses

The percentage of losses from which a team salvaged one point.

What the metric does not claim

Loser Point Lift is not a serious stat, nor is it a real attempt to determine which team effectively played better, or is more deserving of a win, or dominated but lost in regulation, or stole a win it did not deserve, or got to overtime despite being badly outplayed.

Loser Point Lift does not properly account for most advanced analytics like expected goals or more sophisticated team-strength models. Hell, it doesn’t even consider things like goal differential! It simply illustrates the standings value of a point rescued in defeat and allows us to understand which NHL teams are total OT merchants.
