The Loser Point

We live in a two-point world. And there are no friends in overtime.

One of these teams is traveling forward through the standings. The other one's going backwards. Can you tell which is which?

When you exit regulation, you will perceive the game as moving backwards. But you are the one who is inverted. So we came up with overly-complicated stats because there's no grammatical consensus on how to talk about three-on-three.

You have to have dropped it...

These metrics have been manufactured in the future; they're streaming back at us to explain the extremely complicated, twist-laden nature of extra-time games — without much care for whether or not fans liked the ending.

A high GTFO% can come from losing a lot of OT sessions. And a positive SAD is easier to grow from minimal SOs. Instinct — got it.

What's happened, happened. Which is an expression of faith in the point system, not an excuse to play for the shootout.

GTFO%

Games That Finish in Overtime - i.e. what percentage of their extra-time games do not require a shootout. Win or lose, these teams would rather play odd-man rush roulette than spectate some solo artists.

(OT wins + OT losses) ÷ all extra-time games × 100

GWR%

Bettman's lifelong mission, financed and guided by the future, has been to find and reassemble the loser point. Gimmick Win Ratio shows how often their trips beyond regulation wind up being fully successful missions.

(OT wins + SO wins) ÷ all extra-time games × 100

Rotas

ASS%

Attempted Shootouts Scored. Make a move. Round one. Shoot your shot. What could go wrong?

Team SO goals ÷ team attempts × 100

USSR%

Unsuccessful SO Shots Received. Saves, misses, hit posts all count. Unlike inflation, higher is better.

No-goal rounds ÷ total faced × 100

SAD (pp)

Shootout Accuracy Differential: a team's SO scoring rate gap in percentage points. Make your pp big.

ASS% + USSR% − 100%

The Algorithm

40% ASS + 75% USSR − 100% = +15 pp SAD

Opponents score on 25% of attempts. You score on 40%. Positive SAD means this team gets that life is meaningless but they're out to enjoy its little gimmicks. Negative SAD can be good for artists and emo kids but in the NHL, it's just sad.

I’ll see you in the beginning, friend...
